Birthday J Recap of my birthday and Halloween: My birthday was awesome. So great to still have birthweeks...where the festivities go down for a whole week. -Sipping Tesoro and Don Fulano anejo tequilas -my sisters surprise present: Swimming with dolphins at San Diego Seaworld -remote controlled helicopter. An old birthday wish finally fulfilled -pumpkin carving party -driving my dad's MG again after 5 years -splurging on records again with birthday money (Ebo Taylor, Carlos Ramos, Toyan, Etiole de Dakar, Candi Staton, etc) -Geisha house dinner where (too) much food was eaten and just enough sake was drank. -Buffalo Inn for pitchers on Halloween with my Dad. -Getting some good artwork done in the past couple weeks. Pretty soon, I want to use them to make another animated flavors short to use for some of Cam's songs. Been WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long since I've made a movie. -Settling in the new place with Col and enjoying every minute. | | Friday, October 9th, 2009 | | 10:44 am |
Weather Break Col and I are settling in to our new place. We still have more than a few things we need to get. On top on that list is something for one of my speakers to stand on so we can finally play some real records and not just mp3's through horrible tinny computer speakers. But possessions aside, I love living here. Trying out new restaurants, walking and exploring the neighborhood and all it's amazing craftsmen houses, late night art making, etc. I hope to stay here for a very long time. Now on to finding a better job... In the meantime, I present some truly random pics from my cell phone with some commentary ( enjoy ) | | Friday, August 7th, 2009 | | 12:23 am |
Bon Voyage Rancho Cucamonga After about 4 years, I'm finally saying goodbye to my small room at my folks house and moving back to wonderful Pasadena California. I can't tell you how excited I am to get back not only to living on my own, but living in one of my favorite cities in the world. I'm sure this will be the key to reviving my (non existant) art production, music appreciation, and overall well being! Accompanying me will be my lovely lady Col, and together we will bring a small slice of wonderful to our new place. I anxiously look forward to posting my first journal update from the new place. | | Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 | | 7:05 pm |
Spelunking in La Jolla Col and I spent the weekend of Earth Day in San Diego where we took advantage of the great weather and packed so much into 2 days that I needed a couple days to recover. Tequila bars, late night beer runs, Earth Day Festival at Balboa Park, Dub music at the World Beat Cultural Center, Pizza and pools, Rancho and Co-Op, Cliff top picnics....Nary a minute was wasted. Too much good music has been played lately I can't even list just one below, so I'll name a couple here: Carlos Ramos -- Fuego Malone & Barnes -- Freedom Serenade Gloria Ann Taylor -- Deep inside you Human Arts Ensemble -- Under the Sun various African lp's from various wonderful blogs Almost pacifies my lust for the actual lps.....ha ha yeah right. Superman 3, are you there? The last day I spent in Pasadena was a welcome break from the Rancho house of loud noises. Got out there a little late because I had to wait for the mail, but more specifically my new shipment of African records. After making it to Pasadena, we headed to the Rancho Bar and had a ice cold pitcher of Craftsmen beer....my absolute favorite! After that, we headed to Zephyr for some coffee and hooka (finally). By now we're feeling alright, and we started back to Cam's new place and made some music where I was in control of the Space Echo. In my drunken haze, I took Cam's blanket he got from India and used it as a ( Mystical Dub Cape ) Current Mood: workingCurrent Music: cult "the mail must go through" | | Monday, February 2nd, 2009 | | 4:52 pm |
Weekend and a half Finally took a roadtrip with Col to Salvation Mountain. If you've never heard of it, it's a folk art landmark near the Salton Sea. Made by one man over the course of 30 years. It was quite amazing and we even got a tour from the man himself: Leonard Knight. We met up with Cam and the gang and spent quite a bit of time exploring the mountain's many colorful twists and turns. We then filled up on some Mexican food nearby and headed out to get a closer look at the Salton Sea. Spent some time skipping rocks and decided to make our way home (it's about a 3 hour drive home) On the ride back, we took some time out to hit up Hadley's for a famous date shake that I've been craving for forever. We even walked over to Casino Morongo and dropped $5 in some slots before finally driving the last stretch home. We fell into bed exhausted and spent most of Sunday relaxing. We did make some home made garlic bread that I still taste over a day later. Current Music: Gloria Taylor -- love is a hurting thing | | Friday, January 23rd, 2009 | | 12:48 pm |
First post in a couple months. I can't even begin to recap....so I'll just start anew. Just designing some new belts while listening to the sound of light rain outside. I love that sound so much I stopped listening to some music I've been waiting to hear for years! Everything is well on the homefront, my folks just returned from a 14 day long New York trip. I loved having the house to myself for a little while but I have to admit I'm happy to see them home again. This month and next month are shaping up to be really busy. I'll have to keep my camera, and wallet on the ready at all times. Between concerts, records, Arthur Verocai, Salvation Mountain, MAGIC, Valentines Day, Birthdays galore, New work, etc. Whew! I'll just have to zip up my coat and rush in. Up and at em' Current Music: sound of rain outside | | Monday, October 20th, 2008 | | 9:13 pm |
October...what a month I will always miss and love you Gram!!! So I'm lying on my bed in my room at my parents house. Tomorrow is my 31st birthday. I'm hoping the job interview at the art school goes great so I can finally move out of my parents house again. It's been a great 3 years here, but I feel it would be a great change/update in my life to have a place to call my own. Here's to hoping! So anyways, tomorrow I have a few buds coming over to celebrate my bday. We are having a bbq where much music, dancing, food and fun will be enjoyed. I had a little get together a couple days ago also with a few people at the Santa Anita Race Track. Didn't win anything but still had a great time. Especially with Col in the parking lot as we had a tailgate party with snacks and plenty of beer. Bahooka was a blur and Mike's house was blur-ier but still had a blast playing Rock Band. Loving the weather right now Those almost unbearable hot days working in my room are almost over! I'm loving this overcast tease of a day knowing it's only a show of whats to come in a couple months. So last month was almost a blur. Going to Portland for a week where Col and I enjoyed everything that wonderful city has to offer. Food, Beer, Fun....It really is like Disneyland for grown ups...even though I still love Disneyland as a grown up! Almost immediately after our return, I was off to Vegas for a week with my partner in crime Cameron where we helped my Dad at the trade show MAGIC. That was really fun it itself too. Although I was really happy to get back home from that one after the hectic schedule. These days are mostly spent on auto pilot and I haven't felt much like music (surprisingly) or work. I'm sure I'll get through this funk soon as theres soooo much going on for the rest of this month and my Bday next month. Back to the races! | | Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | | 11:20 am |
Last day of the month Had a free night to myself a couple days ago that found me enjoying a couple bottles of ice cold Tecate. Before you know it, I was digging into my gospel section. It was fun recording about 50 songs while dancing around and enjoying a little alone time. Tonight I have another day off that I'm not quite sure yet how I want to spend it. One things for sure I'm looking foward to Portland in about a week as well as my Mom's birthday this Saturday that should take us to LA for the day. We are probably going to the Chateau Marmont for drinks and what not followed by dinner at Dar Magrebs. Should be a great day. Another Beer It's been too long. Probably should update. Things have been going pretty paint-by-numbers (not that thats a bad thing!) I've been really enjoying myself while spending time with the regulars going on adventures and the like. I've also really been enjoying what seems like the last days of Randy's Records. Talk about about the end of an era. I've been going there for almost 7 years! There was nothing like spending hours upon hours going through thousands of 45's, coming back home and drinking beers while playing the new finds. I will miss him. Speaking of records, they have been pretty plentiful as of late, coming from everywhere. I've been really happy to find soooo many want-list wishes but almost nothing beats Cam calling me up last Sunday morning from the Pasadena record fair telling me he found a gospel record I've been looking for FOREVER!!! The Master Keys in Concert Hallelujah!! In other news, the weeklong Portland trip with my lady is coming up in a little less than a month. I'm really excited to revisit one of my favorite cities in the world! Of course pictures will be taken and posted along with ramblings in typical Casey style. You know my steez. Which reminds me, I need to make a new top 10 list soon of "things I love" the 2008 edition Current Mood: chipperCurrent Music: Roy Brooks and the Artistic Truth | | Friday, May 30th, 2008 | | 12:39 am |
What a week
Mondays have become a sort of "unofficial" guys day out. Foncho, Cam and I now spend those days galavanting around town (or further) drinking along the way, smoking j's, listening to music, and just forgeting it's supposed to be a work day. So this particular weeks episode found us visiting Atomic Records early on, after which we had some mighty mid-day margaritas. After then we decided to visit the closest beach which happend to be right by LAX. We got lost along the way but made it a good thing by finally paying a visit to the famous Watts towers. I've been wanting to see it FOREVER but never made the trek there. It was beautiful and I even liked looking at the Watts community (from the safety of a moving car that is). After walking around the towers for a while, we headed the right way toward the beach. While there, we enjoyed plenty of beer while relaxing on the sand and getting distracted by the huge planes taking off above our heads every 15 minutes or so. We cooked some great food and made some friends by the firepit before heading home to listen to music and lounge with a couple other friends. It was a fantastic day and one that doesn't happen too many times in one year. Many Bejas!!! Still going strong Not even tired in the slightest....weird. I started going through a drawer in my room with all my old Art Center stuff. It really tripped me out and led me to bust out my old portable hard drive with damn near everthing I did in school. Went through a bit of history (like the dubbed out still above) while listening to old songs Cam and I did back when and some various collected mp3's from the time. Seems like just yesterday and a million years ago all at the same time. I'm still really happy I went even though I'm going to be paying back the loans for another couple decades (unless I win the lottery or get a cushy job). I don't miss the stressfull routine too much even though I STILL get a healthy reminder of it fairly often courtesy of panic-y dreams relating to finals and last minute assignments. It's funny that my brain constructed a special, fake Art Center dreamscape that the very sight of brings about feelings of absolute fear. But all of that aside, I have no problem saying that the experience mixed with all the great people I met (I really need to try and keep better in touch with them....hi Alix!) make it all worth it. 3 a.m. or bust I'm really excited to finish a couple more of these collage like things so I can send them away to the Mac store and have them make a book. It's only like $40 bucks or something for 10 color, double sided pages! How cool would it be to have your own "suede-like" hard cover, art book? In other news I've been on this weird sleeping schedule and just know i'm going to be up until the wee hours tonight even though I'm dead tired. My only saving grace is enjoying the random livejournal search function. Seriously, it's highly addictive. This weeks been a breeze. Little work and full pay makes Casey a creative boy. Worked on some more artwork (as seen above), enjoyed the rainy day weather by taking bike rides at dusk, caught up on my internetery (my own word meaning "internet routine"), returned to my regular work out regimen, put on some great records and read/cleaned. Also trying real hard to slow down the record buying which is hard when your life revolves around music. In other news, I'm anticipating some fun (and low cost) adventures in the near future which include: -This Weekend with Col -The Triumphant Return of Cam -Planning for Col's Bday Next Month -Bowling alley in Eagle Rock on Sunday -More artmaking -Art Gallery/Auboretum -The Cold Weather switch from Beer to Wine -Much much more, but to be continued in the next post, in the meantime here is ( some more artwork if you're interested ) Current Mood: caffinatedCurrent Music: New arrivals from Good Record | | Saturday, February 9th, 2008 | | 10:10 am |
Vegas soon...enjoy life now
The MAGIC show is coming up mighty fast. Which I know is going to be perfect combination of hard work and super fun, so I'm just enjoying the quiet serenity of this morning. Cam left for Mexico for two weeks today so we made sure to take advantage of the snow up at Mt. Baldy a couple days ago. | | Thursday, January 24th, 2008 | | 9:14 am |
One for the books
This past weekend was one of those "I wish this would last forever" kinda things. I can't even use suitable adjectives to adequately convey how much fun I had. The only thing I can do is; in pure Casey style; give a brief synopsis and include a picture. I hope you will join me as I walk you through my Weekend of Worryfree Wonder On Saturday, Cam, Alfonso, and I went to the Santa Anita Race Track as a belated Christmas present from Cam. Now I haven't been there since I was a kid and in cub scouts and have since always wanted to catch the horse racing there...so whats a better present than that? The day started the right way, with a trip to the liquor store where we each got a 40oz that we drank in the parking lot tailgate style. We were facing the mountains and listening to how cool the sound of the echoing announcer and echoing car alarms sounded together. We went through the tunnel entrance and I was re-amazed by how grand that whole place looks. Like stuck in time. We spent our time there betting the princly sum of $2 on every race and getting another round of beers after losing. The final race we each bet separately and I won both the $4.98 winnings and more importantly, the bragging rights for the rest of the day. On Sunday, My Mom, Col and I went to get Breakfast at Leroy's in Monrovia which is a favorite spot of mine, due to it looking like a vintage diner and it having great food. We filled our stomachs and headed to Venice Beach to show my mom how cool the Venice Canals are. We walked around for a while and stumbled on a bar my Mom had heard of on TV called "James Beach" where we sat outside taking in the beach air and drinking Mojitos. We walked the crazy part of Venice before heading home. On Monday, My Mom, Col, Brooke and I went to have tea at the Huntington Library. It was all overcast and beautiful outside as we sipped English Breakfast and Orange Blossom tea and scarfing down the great finger sandwiches and tarts. We worked some of it off by walking the gardens and strolling through my favorite museum there which houses the Huntington collection of books which is mind blowing to say the least. We left and headed to the Pasadena Paseo and enjoyed a carafe of wine at Bodega and then ate dinner at Tokyo Wako which in my mind ties Tokyo Kitchen for best Japanese restaurant ever. Sooo good. catching up
Here is a pic of Cam and I showing off our distinctive and various rock skipping styles This past week was one of seeing old friends. Catching up with Suzanne by the beach, and Jim out here in Rancho made me happy. Tonight Col and I are heading to Clairmont for a post week wrap up consisting of relaxing, eating, and wandering around. Current Mood: giddy | | Sunday, January 6th, 2008 | | 12:00 pm |
Rainy Day Blues
Here is the first post of 2008. Which will mostly be a catch up of the past couple of weeks. First things first...Christmas was great!!! Col's gifts were amazing and so artfully wrapped that I hated to open them. From the folks, I got the mighty fallback trinty of Moca membership, Auboretum membership, and Record money which would have been just fine by themselves but throw in to the mix some money for the San Diego trip, a portable hard drive (finally), and a couple books, ended up launching it to a very memorable Christmas indeed. A couple days before New Years, Col and I took a last minute trip to San Diego which was as much entertaining as relaxing as we ventured to the wild animal park, drove by the beach to see the sunset, drank in our rooms and watched a movie in bed and ordered pizza. The next day, we ate at our favorite veggie restaurant (Rancho) and bought some snacks at the Co-Op before driving the long way home via the Pacific Coast Highway New Years was a surprise highlight. Normally a day that hangs below expectations, the last day of 2007 was instead a super fun time hanging out at Cam's with a bunch of friends where we danced to the Ipod on shuffle, cooked some great food, drank, and made a little art. Cam's lady took pictures to better help illustrate what I'm talking about http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=24304&id=549611485&l=45090&ref=shareThe first week of 2008 is a little slow due to the fact Col and I are sick (her moreso than me) so in lieu of taking a trip to Vegas with the folks for my sister's birthday, we are lying in bed taking it easy and resting. It's all rainy and beautiful outside...my kinda day Current Mood: sick, but happyCurrent Music: Herbie Hancock -- Speak like a Child | | Saturday, December 15th, 2007 | | 9:52 am |
Weekend Morning Magic Doing the old favorite today. Coffee cup lying stable against my arm while I type away at the computer. Some great Doo Wop comp playing in the background. I think early morning might just be my new favorite time of day. Today Col and I have a choice of options for the evening. Either bake and decorate Christmas cookies or use the get-in-free passes to Knotts. Might be the hardest question I'll have to answer this year because both sound damn near perfect. In other stories, this week I used my one day where I visit Pasadena to celebrate Al's birthday. ( Here is your visual reference guide ) |
